Processing of Whiting Fish and Whiting Fillets into fresh and frozen products
At Neerlandia's processing facility, whiting is quickly and hygienically processed into whiting fillets or other requested forms of processing, depending on the customer market. Because of its soft texture and mild flavor, whiting is suitable for a variety of applications: from fish & chips to finer dishes. Neerlandia supplies whiting in fresh or frozen form, in bulk or consumer packaging, responding to private label requests or specific cutting and packaging requirements. Processing meets high quality standards such as IFS and BRC.
Import of Whiting Fish and Whiting Fillet to the Netherlands
Whiting is purchased by Neerlandia mainly through local fish auctions in the Netherlands, Belgium and France. In addition, part of the supply comes from Irish and British waters, where whiting is caught as a bycatch in mixed fisheries such as cod and haddock. The fish is usually imported as whole, fresh fish or H&G (headed and fished fish). Neerlandia selects whiting by size, freshness and fishing method, with preference given to sustainable catch (e.g. MSC certified) whenever possible.
Export of Whiting Fish and Whiting Fillets to wholesalers within & outside Europe
Whiting is an affordable and versatile whitefish, which is why Neerlandia exports it to countries such as Germany, Spain, Italy, the United Kingdom and Eastern European markets. Especially in countries where whiting is traditionally on the menu, demand remains stable. Thanks to good relationships with customers and flexible logistics, Neerlandia can supply whiting in various shapes and sizes for retail, catering and industry. The combination of competitive price, broad applicability and reliable quality makes whiting an interesting product in Neerlandia's export range.

Frequently Asked Questions
Whiting is a lean white fish belonging to the cod family. It lives mainly in the North Sea, Atlantic Ocean and around the British Isles. Whiting is a relatively small fish, with a soft, mild flavor and fine flesh. It is often caught as a bycatch in cod and plaice fisheries.
Whiting has tender fish meat that cooks quickly. It is delicious when fried briefly in butter or olive oil, lightly breaded or natural. Steaming, grilling or poaching are also suitable preparation methods. Because of its soft texture, careful frying is important to prevent it from falling apart.
Per 100 grams, whiting contains approximately:
Omega-3: ± 0.3 g
In addition, whiting contains vitamin B12, selenium and iodine. It is a lean fish that fits into a healthy diet.

Although both are whitefish, there are distinct differences:
Size: Cod is much larger than whiting.
Texture: Cod is firmer and flakier, whiting is softer and finer in texture.
Taste: Cod has a more neutral taste, whiting is slightly sweeter and milder.
Price: Whiting tends to be cheaper than cod.
Yes, North Sea whiting is being caught more and more sustainably, especially when it carries the MSC label. Because whiting is a fast-growing species, the population recovers quickly. Do choose whiting caught using sustainable fishing methods, such as lines or nets with less bycatch.
Whiting has a mild, slightly sweet flavor. It is softer and finer in texture than cod or pollock, and less pronounced than haddock, for example. Its flavor is friendly and approachable, making it popular with children and in simple fish dishes.
Fresh whiting can be purchased at fish stores, markets and sometimes supermarkets. Online fish suppliers also offer fresh or frozen whiting. Look for clear skin, fresh smell and firm texture. Whiting is often more economical than other whitefish.
Popular whiting dishes include:
Whiting in fish soup or bouillabaisse
Fried whiting fillet with lemon butter
Whiting in a crispy crust (breaded or tempura)
Whiting in the oven with tomato, onion and herbs
Fishcakes or fishcakes with whiting
Cut along the dorsal fin with a sharp knife, working from head to tail, close to the bone. Make small, gentle movements, as the fish flesh is soft. Repeat on both sides. You can also ask the fishmonger to fillet the whiting for you.
Yes, whiting is good to freeze.
- In the freezer (-18°C):
- Raw whiting: can be kept for up to 3 months.
- Fried or prepared whiting: keep for up to 2 months.
Pack fish airtight to prevent dehydration and freezer burn. Thaw slowly in the refrigerator for best results.
